Azhia has been designing and fabricating many of her performance costumes since 1992. She is also co-owner in a costume import business that works with designers in Cairo to create one-of-a-kind pieces for dancers all over the world.

Azhia’s favorite way to work with beads is to create patterns and motifs by hand but when it came to a recent costume that required loom work, Azhia turned to beading maven, Martha Aleo. The resulting costume is a striking collaborative piece.

Azhia’s previous lives included attorney and visual arts director, as well as costume repairer. Currently, Azhia is a dance instructor, performer, choreographer, and hair and makeup stylist.
